How to Make Your Wedding Day Family Photos Quick and Simple

Your wedding day is a celebration of love and commitment, but it’s also a timeless tradition and special occasion to freeze memories with your loved ones. However, getting everyone together for dreaded “family photos” can sometimes feel like herding cats. Keeping everyone in the right place at the right time and looking picture-perfect can be quite the challenge! When you hire me as your photogapher, my goal is to make your wedding day family photos as efficient and stress-free as possible. With a bit of planning, we can make a seamless experience so you can walk away with stunning family portraits!

Six Tips for Seamless Wedding Day Family Photos

Dedicate Sufficient Time for Family Photos

To ensure you get all the shots you want without feeling rushed, allocate at least 30 minutes before or after the ceremony for family photos. This time slot allows your photographer to work through the must-have grouping combinations at a relaxed pace. The benefits of setting aside a specific window are priceless. You’ll avoid feeling overwhelmed, and we can capture those natural smiles. Plus, having this buffer builds in flexibility for any delays or hiccups that may occur. Weddings rarely run perfectly on schedule, so reserving a little extra time means you won’t have to compromise.

Communicate With Family Members

One of the biggest keys to keeping those family photos running smoothly is making sure everyone is present and accounted for when it’s time to start snapping. That’s why I always recommend asking your fam to arrive at least 15 minutes before the scheduled family photo time. You know how it goes – someone gets stuck in traffic, another person misreads the timeline, and the next thing you know, you’re waiting around for stragglers. Sending out some friendly reminders ahead of time can work wonders. Whether it’s a quick text, email, or maybe even putting a designated family member on “rounding up the troops” duty, a little communication about being punctual will pay off!

Provide a List to Your Photographer

One of the best ways to set your photographer up for success is to provide them with a detailed list of all the must-have family photo groupings. I always recommend sitting down and making a list of the important names, relationships, and specific groupings you want captured on your day. Maybe you want traditional portraits of just the parents and siblings, or maybe you want those big extended family shots with all the cousins, aunts, and uncles too! When we work together, we will separate groupings out by the bride’s side and the groom’s side to streamline family members and keep the groupings moving largest to smallest. Trust me, when the chaos of the wedding day hits, having those details ironed out beforehand is a total lifesaver for everyone involved!

Trust Your Photographer’s Expertise

Lean into your photographer’s expertise and let them take the lead. We have seriously been there and done that – coordinating large groups for photos is our bread and butter! With countless weddings under our belt, we know all the tricks of the trade to keep things moving efficiently. We have the experience and skills to expertly gather your loved ones, nail those poses, and even learn everyone’s names to call them out.

My Personal Wedding Day Questionnaire

One thing I always do with my wedding collections to ensure we’re fully prepared for those family photos is send out a detailed questionnaire about 12 weeks before the wedding day. It allows me to really get into the nitty-gritty details with you. I have you list out all the important family names and relationships, as well as specify exactly what groupings you’ll want captured from both sides. We talk through everything from the ceremony logistics to those must-have romantic portraits of just the two of you!

Then, a couple weeks out from the wedding, we go through and finalize the rough draft of your wedding day timeline together. This gives you a chance to review everything with a fresh set of eyes and make any final tweaks or additions to the family photo list, etc. That way, once the wedding day rolls around, we’re locked and loaded with a clear vision and timeline. No surprises or dropped balls! Just a seamless experience focused on enjoying your nearest and dearest.

Wedding Day Prep

When your wedding day finally arrives, you can rest assured that I’ve got everything covered for those family portraits. I’ll be there bright-eyed and bushy-tailed with the finalized timeline and family photo checklist ready to go.

My goal is to make it all feel easy-breezy. We’ll flow through portrait groupings one by one. Before you know it, you’ll have a beautiful array of family photos in the can with minimal stress and maximum laughs! Just think of me as the friendly photo traffic controller keeping everything running.

Don’t be afraid to lean on your photographer – they’re the pros and have done this countless times before! By communicating early and making a solid plan together, you can ensure everyone is on the same page. Send out timely reminders, finalize the wedding day family photo checklist ahead of time, or even appoint someone to wrangle relatives. Putting in that little bit of extra effort will pay off. At the end of the day, you’ll be able to kick back and love on your family instead of stressing over the logistics. Trust me, it’s so worth it when you have those beautiful photos to look back on!
